African Sci-Fi and Female Empowerment

Whereas in much western sci-fi the future is often depicted as a dystopian nightmare of rape, violence, breakdown of society and the plundering of the Earth for its final natural resources, in African sci-fi it is not uncommon for women to be depicted as the lead hero defeating these evils. Whether it’s travelling back through time to tackle slavery in Octavia Butlers’s Kindred and Haile Girma’s Sankofa or averting ecological disaster in Wanuri Kahiu’s Pumzi.
