GWVSN: Information Session About Honour-Based Violence

[Glasgow] 16th January, Adelphi Centre, Commercial Road, G5, 10am to 1pm.

“Honour-based violence” is a term featuring in many sensational headlines of recent times but one still surrounded by confusion, assumption and apprehension.

Mridul Wadhwa and Lisa Rigby from Shakti Women’s Aid will lead a session that aims to demystify the term ‘Honour’, what honour-based violence is (and what it is not), who is affected in Scotland and what measures and considerations are needed to reduce risk and increase safety for people affected.

This introduction session will include direct inputs (including video clips) and group discussion on issues including culture, family and community, connections to the continuum of violence against women, forced marriage, female genital mutilation and the law.

This information session is open to women service providers (paid or unpaid) working in the field of equality and diversity, women staff and individuals who are interested in this issue and who would like to increase their knowledge and awareness.

Tea, coffee and breakfast pastries will be available from 9.30am.
You must register for this event and places are limited therefore please register with Lorna as soon as possible at Lorna@wisewomen.org.uk or telephone 0141 550 7557 with your name, organisation and any access needs by Monday 14th January 2013.
Travel expenses will be available.
