Welcome to the monthly GWL update.  A regular update about the activities and news at Glasgow Women’s Library.  Embedded in this message are links to more information on our website – just click on the titles in bold throughout. We regularly update our facebook and twitter with our news and information on other groups activities, so make sure you join us on there.

We’re updating you on all our exciting events and activities one day earlier this month because of the Easter weekend holiday.  Hope you have something lovely planned, and if not then why not check out some of our April activities to make up for it!

In April we’ll be promoting books that make you feel great! We are launching an inspiring collection of fiction and poetry books specially chosen with your wellbeing in mind.  Be Inspired Reading for Wellbeing is on  Wednesday 11th April at 2pm and is completely free!

Or, if you’re looking for something to do of a lunch time why not join our Unwind with a Book group, starting on Thursday 26th April and running weekly between 12pm and 2pm is Glasgow’s first women-only Get Into Reading group. Bring your packed lunch along to our weekly group to share stories, books and poems in a relaxed and friendly environment.  Whether you’re a reader, a non-reader, or simply would like some time and space to relax over lunch time, all ages are welcome. Read aloud if you are in the mood, or just sit back, relax and enjoy the stories.

There’s also an opportunity to really get to know your library collection on Wednesday 2nd May between 2pm and 4pm at the Getting the most from your library collection special.

Are you interested in becoming an East End Women’s History Detective? Join our informal weekly group that will be unearthing and highlighting the achievements of women in this rich area of women’s history. Suitable for any level and supported by GWL staff the sessions start on Tuesday 17th April, 6pm to 7.30pm.

There are a few places left on our Hidden Gems of Garnethill walk on Sunday 22nd April, thanks to some great press coverage of the walks round International Women’s Day these are becoming more and more popular – so book early to avoid disappointment. Please note that the Necropolis walk scheduled for May is now fully booked.

Continuing the Women’s History theme, our next Women Make History Workshop: Women and Munitions is on Thursday 19th April at 6pm and will be looking at capturing daughters’ memories of their pioneering mothers. There will also be some fabulous footage of women working in munitions presented by Scottish Screen at this session. Come along if you have a story to share or are interested in hearing others.

Monday 23rd April is World Book Night. Celebrate the joy of reading with us on the most far-reaching and ambitious celebration of adult reading ever seen in the UK, connecting readers with a million free books. From 5.30pm at the library there’s another fun and friendly event. Why not come along and pick up your free book and enjoy some tea, cake and chat amongst the library stacks.

Broaden your cinematic horizons with our programme of free, monthly, women-only BME film screenings. There are 2 in April:
Dor on Monday  23rd April, 10am to 12pm at GAMH, St Andrew’s by the Green and
Arranged on Wednesday 25th April, 11.30am to 2pm, the Muslim Women’s Resource Centre

Finally, our Researching Women’s History in Dumbarton course has started, but it’s not too late to join. The course runs from 10am to 12pm on Fridays at Dumbarton Library and is completely free and is a fantastic opportunity to find out more about the suffragettes in Scotland, Turkey Red, or women who worked in the shipyards? This course is suitable for beginners and will show you how to research women’s history in your local area. For more information and to book your place, contact Morag at Glasgow Women’s Library on 0141 248 9969.
