Prime Minister David Cameron today used his annual keynote speech to Conservative Party Conference to reaffirm his support for same sex marriage. Cameron received applause from the conference after saying “to anyone who has reservations, I say… I don’t support gay marriage despite being a Conservative. I support gay marriage because I’m a Conservative.” The Prime Minister claimed his support for same sex marriage was based on a belief in ‘equality’ and ‘commitment’, arguing “Conservatives believe in the ties that bind us; that society is stronger when we make vows to each other and support each other.” He said “it shouldn’t matter whether commitment was between a man and a woman, a woman and a woman, or a man and another man.” A full text of the speech can be found on the Telegraph website
