International Women’s Day vigil, George Square, Friday 11 March 2011, 5pm – 6.30pm

March 10, 2011

Glasgow Feminist Network has called an International Women’s Day vigil to take place in George Square on Friday 11 March 2011, from 5pm – 6.30pm. This follows a series of attacks on women in Glasgow’s City Centre and West End in which at least four women have been raped since the New Year.

Scotland has one of the lowest rape conviction rates in Europe – too many attacks on women go unnoticed, unreported and unpunished.

The Tory list MSP for Glasgow, Bill Aitken, was forced to stand down as convenor of the Scottish Parliament Justice Committee after disgraceful comments in which he asked a journalist if one of the victims was a prostitute, as well as making racist comments about the alleged perpetrators.

* We demand that Bill Aitken stand down as an MSP – and that his party leader, Annabel Goldie, publicly condemns his remarks.
* We defend the rights of all women to be safe on Glasgow’s streets and public spaces.
* We demand that immediate action be taken to prevent future attacks.
